Came across this name yesterday and thought it sounds familiar. After some asking around, I came to remember that he's a Sabahan guitarist. Super talented. :)

Also, he owns RAM studio, a recording studio in Kota Kinabalu. Me and my music teacher went there once. A bunch of her students came together to make a compilation album for her son's birthday. :)

2011: A Review

[Depression Alert]
Studies have shown that social networking can actually cause more stress, considering that people tend to post only happy things on Facebook and blogs, which gives you a false sense of everybody-is-happy-except-you.

That means I'll be only posting happy things to wrap up the year 2011. :)

1. T-Shirt Designing

For half of the year I was so engrossed with this website called DesignByHumans. It's practically a website where you can submit your shirt design, and with enough votes, one may get his/her design printed and start earning cash.

However, things sizzled out the moment I realised that I'm no way on par with the fellow designers there, and the community weren't fond of minimalism.

Not that I hate them, just felt that I'm not ready to take on the world.

All these years I've been avoiding to come out with a new year resolution, the rationale being that it's not going to be achieved anyway. Probably will make one for this year, but it'll be confidential. :P

The buildup before the big run. Kee Tat took my racing kit for me. :) As you can see, they gave us a racing jersey and a water bottle. Quite worth it for RM 20, eh?

Moments before the flag off. It's so crowded, I started sweating like crazy even before it started.

Case in point. Look at the crowd. Good thing I'm in front of them. Not BEHIND them.

Nike invited Mizz Nina to make a guest performance right after the run.

Too bad they don't give out finisher medal. Instead, they gave out this finisher pen drive.

A Random Muse on Our Daily Conversation

"Half an hour later. Come on. Use some common sense, of course it's in the morning."

Dude. Half the short cases of OnG are in the afternoon. And do not talk common sense to me when you are answering everything in assumptive tone. Of course I know you're looking for your stuff! I'll have slapped you in the face if you were looking for MY stuff.

This is not a verbal insult. This is, as I'd mentioned, a muse. A muse on how we always interact with the assumption that the receiver knows what we're talking about. A muse on how we've answered half-heartedly to most of our conversations. I myself do that as well, I do admit that. What are you looking for, my stuffs?! That's like answering "this baby is sick" when asked to diagnose the patient. What I find is that most of our supervisors aren't amused by such responses. What may be unintentional on our part may look to them as a "politician's answer" that attempts to answer everything under the big umbrella: to them it is a sign of lack of intelligence, and we're trying to cover it up with a super broad spectrum answer.

Man, study week does make me grumpy.

'Creative differences'. Sounds so technical, yet so superficial. That's the professional way of saying both artistes are at each other's throat.

For long I've dealt with disappointments of companies 're-inventing' my designs. It feels terrible. It's like you have just gave birth to a perfectly healthy baby. The only catch is the nose is missing.

I would say the sole cause of such calamity (at least to me it is) is ineffective communication. When was the last time you had an argument that started with "I thought you would've known!"?

Oh yes. We medical students especially, the self-proclaimed highly-intelligent beings, always have the tendency to ASSUME. We assume people would have known what we're talking about. We assume the other person would have inform the third person about a change of plan. We assume you would've expected your designs to be altered.

So there's my housemate coming into my room with one of his hamsters in his hand.

"I wonder how it survived without food for these few days."

"You mean you starve him?"

"No. This was the one which escaped and disappeared last week."

"Dude. What makes you think I would've recognised how each and every one of your hamsters looked like."

No prize for guessing what's the next line. Most of the time we would've laughed this off as a bad joke. Some others turned into a heated argument.

For long I've chose to remain silent over engaging in an exchange of angry words. It's like a war of two-edged swords. You don't leave the battlefield unscathed. Not if you're a lawyer. It's hard to do so especially if your instinct was to jump at the first hint of unjust (towards oneself, of course).

I love my designs. Who wouldn't? And I do hope the final product is always like what I've imagined them to be. I hope you do understand that what has happened is not merely a one-sided damage. My baby is now without a nose.

Shah Alam - Klang Trip!

Medical life was way too bored all right, so I planned this trip like, 1 am in the morning, 10 hours before the trip, and all it took was a few text messages (*My cousin Evelyn claimed that it was 12 text messages due to ineffective communication).

The plan was simple: Go to Shah Alam and pick up Eve, drive to Klang and meet up with Hau Wei, then nature will takes it's course.

Stop #1: Bah Kut Teh
Bah Kut Teh. Sorry, no pictures. It's made of pork and thus it might offend my Muslim readers. Just joking. I forgot to snap any pictures.

Stop #2: The Famous Klang Cendol
Nice cendol, though personally I prefer the one I had in Melaka....

By this time my stomach is already full of water...

Stop #3: Ampang Superbowl
We intended to go for roti canai instead, but decided that we need to give our stomachs a break. So we went for this.

Super awesome style, then we saw the ball rolled down the drain... No, that yellow ball doesn't belong to me...

Stop #4: Pandamaran's Roti Canai
Next we went to this famous roti canai in Pandamaran. This was our last stop in Klang (special thanks to Hau Wei).

From this picture you can imagine how famous is their shop; they have their name written in three languages!

Stop #5: Evelyn's house
Idling while waiting for dinner. It's not like both me and Evelyn were going to eat any more...

See this, he's from Russia. Never grew tired of taking his picture. :)

Put my hand by the side to let you see how big is he. He's bigger than any cats you see around. And boy, he's a stuck up lad. He didn't even bother to look at me!

Stop #6: Teo Chew Porridge
Last stop before I headed back to Cheras! Well, didn't really tasted the food there. But they have nice leong cha. :)

What Happened?

Tan Sri Musa Hassan visiting our clinical booth! (Former Inspector-General of Police Malaysia)

And what importance did this clinical booth hold that we were visited by such a big name? Not much, actually. His daughter just happened to be our junior. :) But it's great to meet him personally nonetheless. He still has this 'aura' even after he retired.

What Actually Happened?

So there we were the seniors sitting around with nothing much to do (yawn), when suddenly Risq came and requested that the next customer/patient's blood pressure be taken by a senior medical student for 'more accurate result'. Their coursemate is bringing her father here to support us and he's a big shot. Heard her saying 'ketua polis' (head of police) or something like that.

Then?

The next thing I knew I was sitting in the reception counter jotting down details for this daddy's friend. That's when I overheard 'Musa Hassan'.

Awesome. And I thought he's probably the head of a district/state police department. This is Tan Sri Musa Hassan, the former Inspector-General of Police Malaysia. He was the boss of every single policeman in Malaysia.

Then? What Else?

Nothing much. Health check-up proceeded, and a brief photography session ensued. And everyone of us lived happily ever after.

掘金女百般利用，单恋却深陷难以自拔。

這是一部來自中國的電。故事述說著一個掘金女與一個平凡不過的男人；一個百般的利用，另一個無法自拔的任勞任怨。究竟單戀能發展成甚麼呢？

本身不太喜歡到電影院看華語片，更不用說浪漫愛情片。此片劇情簡單，但導演卻異常地把它拿捏的恰到好處。意外碰上的一齣電影卻讓我不得不將他好好介紹一番。只是故事發展如一般的中國電影一樣，偏慢。電影院冷得更是讓我不得不半途逃出去稍微'解凍'。

總的來說，一部值得看的電影，冷衣就帶多一套吧。還有，女配角很漂亮喔！：）

Om Nom Nom @ Ikea Cafe

And for some unknown reasons, I ended up driving all the way to Damansara to have IKEA meatballs. Why such random act? 'Cos they're really, really delicious!

This is the cart/rack we used to put our food.

And here's the Swedish meatballs I was talking about. RM1 per meatball. Sounds reasonable.

Food cart/rack in action. Somehow I have a feeling I was shopping for furniture instead of food.

And I forgot what was the name of the chicken dish. I was stopped by the waiter when I was about to snap its picture. But anyway, the main attention goes to the meatball. It has really nice texture, and the gravy is really unique.

And bought myself this afro shirt. Only realised its an afro instead of Arnold Schwarzenegger after I looked at this photo.

Did I mentioned I bought a hanging rack? It is outside because I realised only too late that it's longer than my cupboard.

The nice part is that it can be pulled out. Perfect as my tie rack. :)

Just How Awesome McD Can Be

So here I am, trying to get my late dinner and my things done in the nearby McD. Ordered a medium set of GCB and another ala carte burger.

And this cashier, routinely repeated my order to me. Lucky I was paying attention to her.

"So you want two sets of burgers?"

"No. I want set medium, and an ala carte."

"So you want a medium GCB and a medium set Ala Carte?" Where on earth do you find a burger named Ala Carte?!

"No. I want a MEDIUM burger. Set. Another burger. Burger only. Burger." I was reduced to relying solely on hand signs.

"So you want a deluxe set?" How the hell does McD has deluxe set?! Can somebody just get me another waitress?!

And so I ended up with two sets of burgers. And another senior waiter came and saved my day. Then it's Yi Rong's turn to order.

"I want a GCB set large please. Thank you."

"So you want a medium set?"

Product Review: Microsoft Wireless Desktop 2000

My wireless Bluetooth mouse has been showing signs of old age lately: After serving me for almost three years, it started to disconnect by itself and display erratic behaviour when scrolling through pages. It's a matter of time before I need to get another mouse for myself.

Then this crazy idea of getting BOTH wireless keyboard and mouse struck me. I started a frantic search for any Logitech and Microsoft keyboard and mouse combos which really fits me. Logitech has some really awesome combos, but everything starts from a price of RM 200 and so on...

And to cut the story short (it's a sad story, you won't want to hear it), in the end I settled for this from Microsoft.

Microsoft Wireless Desktop 800

What's really interesting about this keyboard and mouse set is it's price. The cheapest I found in Low Yat was a whopping RM 59. A similar product from Logitech is about RM 70+, and it's quality is nowhere below Logitech's. However, of course you can't expect really awesome stuffs. The mouse still runs on optical technology, not laser. And they don't provide software to adjust the sensitivity of the mouse, so if you're planning to use it for errands with high accuracy (i.e. gaming, graphic designing, etc.), don't buy this one.

The mouse is my main complaint. Call me picky, but I expect my mouse to look good or at least something like my previous mouse.

Logitech Wireless Bluetooth Mouse V470

For a moment I was torn between this said set and another set which costs RM 129. And like I said, I am picky. This set couldn't match my laptop because of it's white bottom, while the other mouse looks ugly (Aargh!)

Microsoft Wireless Desktop 3000

In the end, I managed to convince myself that the keyboard's plus point can actually offset the ugliness of the mouse (It's egronomical, much to my relief). Speaking of the keyboard, it 's key are widely spaced, so as to ensure the comfort while typing (I haven't got used to this yet, everytime I pressed Enter, I would accidentally pressed Delete and something will 'magically' disappear from my computer). Plus the keys are really quite. It's a personal preference, but some might like the clattiness of keyboards.

But the keyboard ain't perfect: Microsoft were somehow convinced that people don't use Function keys (F1 -F12) at all. SO they were made really small. Not cool when you need to constantly refresh your web page. Plus, they don't have indicator lights for Caps Lock and Num Lock.

The receiver is quite small, only the 1/3 the size of a typical pen drive.

But in a world where everyone is racing for nano receiver, the size pales in comparison.

The bottomline is, this set is a good worth of money, considering it's from one of the two most established manufacturers of keyboard and mice. But if you have extra leftover form your wallet, do consider something more awesome. :)

Pros: Cheap, spacious keyboard, quite keys, small receiver (but not the smallest around).
Cons: Ugly mouse, small function keys, no indicator lights for Caps Lock and Num Lock.

p/s: I realise I haven't been writing much about me lately, probably due to the fact that KTDI's line's so slow I can't even upload photos. Will try to make it next post! :)

Before iPhone
1. Smartphone was an item of luxury.

2. Touch screen is only useful when you want to show off to your friends.

3. The idea of accessing Internet through the phone seems so far fetched. Who would want to squint their eyes at a screen this small?

4. Nobody, I repeat, nobody would have thought of coming out with a phone which allows you to download apps, making your phone tailored made to your own needs.

Now with iPhone
1. Any idea what happened to the normal phones?

2. You still use touch screen to show off to your friends, only that they made it cooler and you get to use more fingers on it.

3. Everybody squints their eyes at the minuscule website displayed on their phone.

4. Android and Windows Phone 7 have been scrambling to make their arsenal of apps a worthy foe to those of iOS.

The problem with iPod and iPhone is that they don't provide you with a manual. For example, nobody mentioned to me that tapping the taskbar immediately scrolls back to the top of your page. And tapping the home button twice brings out the multitasking tray, or the music controller of your screen is locked and you're playing music.

Maybe tapping the home button a hundred times will let you talk straight to Steve Jobs.

What Happened to Our Society?

You might have seen this news. It's the latest hype in Facebook after all. A bunch of beings (I'll refrain from addressing them as human) were bullying a girl which they perceived as unattractive. They were cutting away her hair, while constantly dealing blows to her head, and one of them were actually smart enough to record it on a phone and uploaded it. Things up to this stage were typical of any school bullying cases.

Until somebody posted it on Facebook.

Angry comments were swarming in by hundreds. Though none were of civilised arguments, most of them were clearly directed at those involved in the bullying. Things took yet another turn when one of the comments actually provided links to the Facebook pages of those allegedly involved in the assault.

I guess what happened later would be an influx of angry comments into their respective pages. The latest one would be a plea from them telling people to stop posting comments on their pages, for they are innocent and nto involved in the said incident.

The funny thing is. Things were the other way round in her blog. Moments ago she was still posting threats with foul words laced to it. How she'd had found out who posted the video, how she would have beat the fellow up, how she doesn't give a damn to what others said, etc.

Pity to those students. It seems like their ignorance, and should I say, stupidity is at a all-time high. The sad truth is, this does not happen only in secondary schools. Witless arguments happen practically everywhere, even in med school.

Mankind is wading towards stupidity. At this rate, we don't need 2012 to wipe us out. We will.

Some guy called WieWie mistook you as a chick and started sending lame messages which I think even a girl won't be interested in.
That house mate of yours saw you wearing only your socks, standing outside YOUR OWN room and the thing he said to you is: "Stop wearing shoes into the house for God's sake".

Red Tapes

Don't get me wrong. Not going to complain about the government here. Not going to shout out at how things have been haywire nowadays. Just a bemusement of what has been here since the existence of bureaucracy, and something we have so gotten used to: red tapes.

So I am applying for something, and required a recommendation letter from the faculty. So I went to the academics department, seek audience with the person in charge, and was told to wait for a call the next working day. The call did came: They told me to write a letter to apply for it.

Okay...

Let me get this straight, so in order to get a recommendation letter, I need to write another letter to apply for it?

Never mind that. Done. Then I was told that the person supposed to sign my letter wasn't around. I was asked to send another letter yet again to the dean's office instead. So I asked: "couldn't I just wait until the person comes back? I mean, they've extended the deadline, so I can afford to wait".

"Too late. You told me you were in a hurry, so I scribbled some notes on your letter. Even if you want to do that, you'll have to write in another letter". Man.

The source of my torment

Remember those days where you'll mention kerenah birokrasi in your Bahasa Melayu essays, without actually going through all of it, lest say realising how tormenting it actually was. My case is a mere kitty here. If you need approval for an event, that's even worse: You'll need approval from the dean's office, a letter to the financial department askign for financial backing, a letter to the multimedia department stating when do you need to use the hall, a letter of invitation to the relevant persons, etc...

This is where 1Malaysia comes in. I think this is a good idea. I really do, if executed appropriately. 1Malaysia is about unity, not just unity of the nation. Unity of the government, of the bureaucracy processes. I'm not sure whether this has been implemented or not, it was once proposed that we'll be using our own MyKad number as reference number when dealing with government sectors. That's slick. It could save you tons of effort trying to explain to the officers there what were you there for, how to locate your data, why there's no need to recreate a new data for you, and lastly why they should not throw you into jail for throwing a tantrum.

1Malaysia e-mail for all nation? Not at his best, I'll say, but it's a good intention anyway.

Now back to red tapes. So how's my progress? Letter submitted to dean's office. Just waiting for the call that will tell me to write another letter.

Update
So I've screwed up the format of my letter. Currently my letter was meant to ask for approval from the Vice-Chancellor. And I am to write a letter back to the initial department, while asking for Dean to sign my letter of recommendation. Back to square one. Yay.

Firefox 4 & Internet Explorer 9: To Change or Not To Change?

You might have heard of the release of new generation browsers: the Firefox 4 and Internet Explorer 9. Both claimed that they are faster than ever, with support for new web formats. The question is: Is it really that fast?

New generation browsers boast a feature called hardware acceleration. Which means they can direct some of the processing burdens to your underused graphic processing unit (GPU, a.k.a graphic cards). This is most obvious when you're loading a graphic heavy page, where a page which usually take ages to load are suprisingly responsive.

But here's the catch: this feature is only useful when you have a graphic processing unit. These said browsers actually generate a higher processing load than older versions. So if you don't have an adequate GPU, they'll end up chucking everything back to your central processing unit (CPU), which translates to even slower browsing experience.

So here's the bottom line: these upgrades are only worth a shot given your computer has a graphic card. Or else, it's just a pure sacrifice of good browsing experience for the sake of good-looking browsers.

(This first ever tech support was written after I blindly recommended the said browsers to some of my friends, with their netbooks clocking an all time low loading time)

If you think this movie is all about soldiers kicking alien asses, think again. There's more to it.

of selling points
The depiction of the war scenes are awesome (So real, when they were ambushed, everyone scattered for safety, with the camera swaying violently all the way). The side story of loyalty, promises, and bravery are touching. They are sure to leave you in tears.

why does the alien has legs on everything, say the cannons, tanks, and even their command centre?

My work desk. Where has the L-shaped work desk gone? It's still in Setapak. If I'd moved it into this crampy room of mine, I would have to move out the bed and sleep on the table until I graduated.

The Otaku corner. The old, loyal frog still sits quietly on my table. And that Kamen Rider still remains as my most prized possession :)

My laptop. Changed my mousepad just yesterday (I accidentally slapped my old one nearly into two while cleaning it). Oh ya, Just cleaned the cooling fan, so now no more overheating issues for my laptop! Cost me RM 100 though... T.T

All my computer accessories are black, so is the headphone (except for the mousepad). I even have a special hook for it! :)

Lacrime di Giuletta, or translated as Tears of Juliet, is actually a promotional video for a non-mainstream artist's newly released album. But the video itself is, should I say, inspiring. Mother Nature and modern human civilization, could we really live along in harmony? The duet of a guitar and an accordion perfectly harmonizes with the whole ambience of the video. And kudos to the artist for concepting such wonderful artwork and choreography. Such a simplistic yet meaningful coexistence!

On the other side. Temper rose to a whole new boiling point. Retaliation were made. Not with words of reasons and logic. But with even more exchange of angry words.

EAMSC 2011, Thailand (Part 5)

This is the Grand Palace of Thailand. It's locally known as Phra Borom Maha Ratcha Wang.

A mural depiction of the story of Ramayana. Notice the deities were all painted in gold. You'll get to see more glitter.

One of the prominent features of the Grand Palace is Wat Phra Kaew, the temple which houses the emerald Buddha.

The locals will paste gold foil on the Buddha statue and offer their prayer.

Chakri Mahaprasad Hall, the administration office of the Grand Palace. We took our own sweet time messing around with the guards on duty.

That afternoon was our outreach programme. What I had in mind was a typical boring clinical booth (like in Malaysia). But I was wrong! They made us tour around the busy streets of Bangkok to deliver our message to the public. The young and energetic way.

A special post for Group 15!

Noona from South Korea. She first introduced herself as Jesica, but then we have another Jessica from Singapore (in fact, this caused their luggages to be messed up), so eventually she changed her nickname to Noona.

My GMs. Peace on the left, and Ju on the right. Both are from Thailand obviously. My heartiest gratitude for the help throughout the conference and also for putting up with us. That probably explains why Peace always looked lethargic. :P

Legend (LG) from South Korea. Me and him were the only ones (if I'm not mistaken) with experiences of joining previous conferences, so we were the devils in the group: coming out with after-event plans, convinced the whole group on the eve of our presentation to ......

Athena Huang from Taiwan. Probably the youngest in our group. Do not be fooled by the angel eyes. Devil lurks within it.

Nope. She's not in Group 15. In fact, she's in the organising committee. Then why would I put her here? She's pretty. That's why. :P

Eva from Hong Kong...

Emily from China. She's a choir singer. And there was once where I started sharing songs with the group mates. We started talking about Taiwanese and Chinese pop songs. Eventually we started talking about Chinese and Japanese national anthem (not forgetting Malaysia's Negaraku), and I ended up singing some Chinese patriotic and traditional songs with her.

Chang Park from UK. He's a South Korean studying in Imperial College. But we don't get to interact much with him, because he was constantly in jet lag.

Jessica from Singapore. She's the tallest girl in the whole conference, I believe.

Jack from Hong Kong. She and Eva are from the same University and class.

Nick from Australia. A Sarawakian (one of the states in Malaysia) studying in Tasmania. He has a nose which is typically too pointy for a Malaysian. So the whole group were wildly speculating: either he's of mixed blood, or he had a nose job.

Adhitya from Indonesia. I didn't get to meet Aditya from Nepal, so I got him in my group instead.

Hashimari from Japan. Had a hard time conversing (she can't converse well in English, I know no heck of Japanese), but no doubt, she's still a good friend of mine. :)

Hui Lee from Indonesia. Again, a Malaysian born and raised in Indonesia. Seems like I have quite a lot of Malaysian in my group.

Who else did I missed out? Oh, Ravy from Cambodia and Risq from Malaysia (my junior). They are right in the middle of the photo. :)

EAMSC 2011, Thailand (Part 1)

Nice food. And really spicy too. Most of us were tricked into believing green curry is the least spicy. Ended up having the whole group scurrying around looking for water.

And nice cocktail too. :P

A first glimpse of the traffic condition of Bangkok. In the following 5 days we were to experience it first hand, sometimes getting trapped for as long as an hour...

BTS, which I think stands for Bangkok Transit System. Really nice. Though we had problem with the station signs. Once I caught a glimpse of the sign above head and tried to read it before the train leaves. Then only it struck me that the sign says 'Keep Right'.

The moment the keynote lecture ends. I spring into action looking around for friends I knew from previous conferences. Stephie, one of first ever friend I've made through the conferences, and have been seeing her for every single conference!

Man Yee. Knew her when she was in my group during EAMSC Kuala Lumpur. Oh, did I mentioned I was her GM?

The hotel served us mineral water in glass bottles. This company also churns out one of the cheapest beers I've seen to date.

Case in point

29 Baht. That's roughly RM 2.90 in Malaysia. That's even cheaper than a big bottle of Coke! And just when I wonder why there were no drunkards sprawling around the streets of Thailand...

They don't sell it to you after 12. And did I mention? If you're lucky to burst your liver or pancreas, the minimum hospital fees will be 20,000 Baht (roughly RM 2,000), since that we're not the citizens there...

Now, to start this off, let me tell you why I ended up in IKEA.

This is my original office chair that I moved from Setapak to Cheras. Have been using it for slightly more than a year. Then one day, the soldering point right below the seat gave way. It was difficult to sit still on it, as I had to sit on the cushion and at the same time balance the seat on the remaining part of the chair. Plus I don't like it when the cushion absorbs my sweat (yuck). So I went to IKEA to look for a plastic office chair...

The outside of IKEA Damansara. This was not taken by me since I went there at night (I dreamed I was already at IKEA, which made me 4 hours behind my scheduled time of arrival...).My previous impression of IKEA was 'overpriced and pretending to be classy'. It turns out I was half-true. The items are classy after all. But the prices aren't that expensive though...

This is an online brochure of IKEA. Basically every item in IKEA can be described as an art piece. They don't call a white plastic office chair as 'White Plastic Office Chair'. They call it 'Snille'. Every furniture has it own names. The brochure is more like a photo gallery.

The black 'Snille' that I was talking about. Apparently it's even cheaper than my previous chair! Things work slightly different from typical furniture shops: First you go through all the showrooms, jot down what you want, and then make your way to the pick-up area and pick-up the parts. Self-assemble required.

Thought of getting this, but nay, I'm too cool for this. Plus there isn't much space left in my room.

And I got my younger sister this. :) Practically guys were staring at me as I strolled around the showroom hugging this.

Took me less than 5 minutes to assemble this. :)

Speaking of assembling, here's a snapshot of the instruction manual. It probably is targeting mainly illiterate people, as it barely contains any words.

This panel says: "If you are too stupid to understand our really simple manual, please kindly call us and we will reluctantly provide you help while rolling our eyes."

2010: A Review

This was not posted by the Juin Yi you all know. This is a review by the Ghost of New Year Past. He shall soon be anticipating posts from the Ghost of New Year Present and Ghost of New Year Yet to Come.

Yeah. Like hell anyone is going to buy this. Anyway, gone is a year and I thought I would like to have a look back at what have happened for the past 1 year.

In General
Year 2010 has been a year of ups and downs for me. Here were the best moments of my years in UKM, as well as the worst. But to prevent spreading the emo to my fellow readers (and to delusion myself only with the good things). I shall only highlight the good ones.

AMSA
Definitely the best thing that have happened to me all year round. Being inducted into the multimedia department was what I would say, my calling. It's like a playground custom-built for me to toy with two of my biggest passion and strengths: computers and arts. So much fun that now I am literally so tired of accepting responsibilities or favour regarding designing.

Term ending soon, and I'm going to miss it very much. Still pondering about my future whereabouts in AMSA, but hell, no regrets.

East Asian Medical Students' Conference
Yeah, it took us whole year to organise this event. And yeah, it ends one week before our end of module assessment. And yeah, I hardly got any sleep and barely even enjoyed myself throughout the event. But was it awesome?

Totally.

DesignByHumans
Just when I thought I am good with digital arts (let's say, 5 out of 10), this website slaps the reality right on my face. My first submission was at the bottom of the food chain! (The only design which I have more votes than, was a design which seems like a work of a elementary school kid with Paint: A dude looking like Dragonball character holding balloons)

But somehow, it inspires me to see how far can I actually go with my drawing skill, of course while juggling with my medical student's life. And oh, my current self assessment will be 2 out of 10. You guys are 1. :P

All in all, I don't feel like churning out a list for my new year resolution. I'll make it sweet and simple: instead of going in all directions like a firework, it's high time I start focusing on a few priorities of my life and bring it to a new level.

That include the quality of my blog contents. :)

Of Motor Show and Flash Mob Dance

Like I'd promised earlier, here are some photos from the Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show that I'd attended last week. Also, a post on a flash mob dance I've seen this morning. :)

And speaking of flash mob, it's a kind of event where an event were pre-planned, but not publicly advertised (in contrary to typical events). The purpose of these activities is more of surprise element, where to the naked eyes, it'll look as if everything is so unexpected and random...

So for this flash mob dance in Mid Valley, it was an anniversary event which comprises of medley from all the flash mobs they've performed, dating back to 2009. I can't upload a video here, due to the severe incompetence of KTDI line, coupled with the sheer ignorance of my dearest blockmates.

In fact, flash mob is slowly gaining it's popularity in Malaysia. StarSports organised a flash mob Glee dance in Pavilion when Glee first aired in Malaysia. And Maxis staged a flash mob for it's iPhone promotion event in KLCC:

But flash mob in other countries particularly in USA has gone great length. Here, Oprah Winfrey gave Black Eyed Peas the surprise of their life when she staged a flash mob dance for their guest appearance!

The Beauty of Sabahans' Bahasa Melayu

Don't get me wrong, this is not a defaming post. I've decided that this time, I'll make the title speaks what I'm going to say. I'll explain why:

I have a deja vu of writing this post before. So I skimmed through all the posts I've written in the past three years. Ah, the nostalgia! I just can't help but started wondering what got me into making unrelated blog titles, click on a random title and I'll be thinking to myself: "What the..., why did I put this as a title?!" (Anyway, couldn't find the said post. Apparently I scraped it early before I posted it.)

OK. Back to the topic. Talking to a friend, I realised that the Bahasa Melayu that we used in Sabah is, so as to say, unique. With influences from Kadazan and Dusun, we have special terms and accents, which might be funny, but it's the exoticness that I like the most.

1. The accent

When speaking Malay in Sabah, as are most pronounced as ah. When you say Tak apa, you don't say tuck-upper, but you say tuck-ah-par.

2. Bikin

This is a term I've never came across during my stay in KL. Bikin simply means make. When you say someone is annoying, you'll say bikin sakit hati instead of saying menyakitkan hati.

3. Limpas

This is when someone is in your way and you need to get through. Compare minta lalu to boleh kasi limpas tak?

4. Kasi

This simply means give. Dia yang kasi saya hadiah ini bah means he's the person who gave me this present.

5. The -bah affix

We put it at the end of our sentences as an accentuation. e.g.:

"Kau jangan kacau saya bah!"

6. Sana

Sana? Why sana? I thought everbody speaks this word? That's because in Sabah, you can actually estimate how far the travelling distance is simply on how long was the word stretched.

When pointing to somewhere far, we'll say saaaaaaaaana instead of sana.

That pretty much sums up what I wanna say. Well, bear in mind certain things are slightly exaggerated due to distortion form my memory. :)

Diagnosis, Anyone?

Chief complaint:

Temperature gradually rises as the travel distance increases. A sudden pike in the thermostat a few hours ago, associated with a burnt smell.

Upon Inspection:

Obviously the source of heat came from the front. The water was completely evaporated. Attempt to readminister fluid was thwarted as a leak was found.

Provisional diagnosis;

What was previously thought to be an air-con gas leak is now suspected to be a leak in the radiator circulation, which might cause me an arm and a leg.

Oh, did I mentioned it's my car?

IMU Post Conference Project - Geriartric Health

In respect to the tradition of AMSA, a post-conference was organised by IMU after the AMSC in Indonesia. The title: Geriatric Health.

This is me, rushing for the new casual T-shirt design for AMSA. Surprisingly, I completed what was left of the design within half an hour, which normally will take me at least half a day.

The group photo for our lil' group. We were divided into small group and were asked to perform a (eyes rolling) sketch. We got the 'most favoured by judge' award (no prize given). My depiction of a dementic old man got Yit Tyse into thinking that I'm just, of all things, being myself there (She's going to get it from me when she enters 3rd year).

Doctors (and even medical students) sometimes take pride at the fact that if we commit even one tiny mistake, it might cost a patient's life. That's the professional way of saying 'The life and death of other people lies within my hand, so my job is definitely WAY cooler than yours.'

But check this out. This was taken from an article inside the in-flight magazine of AirAsia. A doctor was musing over the fact that his mistake might cost a patient's life. But a pilot's wrong judgement will easily jeopardise the lives of 300+ passengers. I had the same thought for engineers: a flaw in the construction might ends up with the lives of thousands...

One fine day, you woke up with this little problem. Just a little problem. But it was so annoying you can't shake it off your mind. Choosing to ignore it, you told yourself that this is just temporary and it is going to resolve by its own shortly.

But it didn't. Slowly, you realised this is not just a slight hiccup. This thing is going to stay, whether you like it or not. You grew more and more frustrated, exasperated at the fact that why are you the one to be fated like such?

You started to look around desperately for a solution, you're even willing to venture uncharted fields in search for a solution. But none seems to be of any effect. Slowly giving up, you reclined to a corner, dousing yourself at the self proclaimed fact that someone you know, just someone outside of your window, might just have the same problem as you do...

Seeing Red

Been working on a design for a red T-shirt. And it was a RGB red instead of CMYK red. Staring at it for a mere 15 minutes is devastating enough. I think I got the colour burned into my eyes.

p/s: CMYK red is from the colour channel used mostly by photos and printings. It is more natural, and less glaring. RGB red, on the other hand, is the 'red' red used mostly by television and computer diplays. Way, way more redder than any red.

The Expendables: What I love about this film is that Mr. Stallone managed to gather all the big shots: Sylvester Stallone himself, Jason Statham from 'The Transporter', Mickey Rourke from 'Iron Man 2', Jet Li, and even the California Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger (but he only appeared for like, 2 minutes?). All these people have one thing in common: publicly labelled as 'too old for action films'.

Well, not only did they proved the critics wrong (though Stallone and Statham did use stunt double, I forgive them in respect of their age), they managed to come out with a cool film too. Cheesy dialogues, ass-kicking actions, the old guns really proved their market prices!

Things We Did in Tanjong Karang

Moments before following the vector team to a fogging site. It is kind of funny when you think back about it: we are following something where usually we would've avoided at all cost!

The fogging machine. One nasty machine. It 'putt's when you initially started it, it makes such a loud noise that the operator had to wear a protective muffler to avoid going deaf, and oh, had I mentioned before? It weighs 13 kg.

Went for Ikan Bakar at Jeram. Not really fresh, but it was one fantastic experience.

Kayaking. What intended to be a leisure past-time activity soon became a kayak race the moment we stepped into one. Throughout the whole event all I heard was Chai mumbling: "Faster, faster faster, windwalk, windwalk, windwalk, grunt, grunt, grunt..."

The barbecue session on the last night in Tanjong Karang. Everybody was going nuts, even with Dr. Rohaizat, Dr. Fazilah and Dr. Faiz's presence. Jonathan was the most stylo to begin with. Sitting (or to be precise, squatting) there with his designer hat, and guess what? Barbecuing...

Our own private seafood trip to Pasir Penambang. Sort of like a graduation party from Tanjong Karang.

Catching fish while everybody were busy with the intervention program.

There won't be any other posting like Medicine and Society. Guess I'm going to miss the good times I had there after all.

Blog Headers - The Evolution of My Artstyle

With this new header, this is officially the ninth header. Up until now, I've kept to the tradition of designing my own headers. And thus, coming up with new header from time to time sort of became a habit, or let's say, a signature of my blog *ahem*. Here's a look back at all the headers till date:

My first ever self-designed header. This was done using Microsoft Paint, so the grains were used to cover up the shortcomings of the design.

The first header I designed with Adobe Photoshop. The header took up an oriental feel, with words arranged in multiple layers. But this was more of an experimental project with Photoshop, so of course the design was kind of simplistic.

Designed this in conjunction with the World AIDS Day exhibition by AMSA. Inspired by the red ribbon and also the main message by Malaysian AIDS Society ("I have AIDS, would you hug me?"), the design is pinkish. But it was a misconcept: pink ribbons are for breast cancer.

This was originally the planned third header. But the pink header's came up ahead, so it became the fourth. This is also an accidental project. I was experimenting with the 'gradient' feature and this came up. :)

The first ever full-week long project for a header! Normally designing headers will take at most hours, but since this requires a few drawings, so the drawings themselves already took days. Then the scanning and rearranging took another few more days...

Do not be confused. Those are not Japanese characters. Those are Braille - a six dot alphabet system designed for blind person. The original idea was to come out with something that looks like the 'Cover Flow' interface of iPod/iTunes, but the outcome was never to my liking (plus one button already took me whole night, so i can't imagine myself spending yet another week).

For the first time, my face appeared in the header! My artstyle gradually progressed from geometric to grunge. Used a black, white and gold colour combination to bring out the bling-bling feel. Up until now, my designs consist mostly of basic shapes like squares and circles. This header was sort of an indicator where I started integrating nature objects and other more complicated items into my designs.

Experimented with animated header. Took a long time, since I was doing it slowly. So I was gradually adding graphics into it whenever I felt like it. Quite satisfied with it, although the 'graffiti' feel wasn't really there. :)

The latest header. My artstyle has thus changed to a more grungy feel. A worn out typeface with a halftone background serves as an echo of my designing style in my recent artworks.

For the first time, went along a fogging team to fog a hotspot in Kuala Selangor (hotspot means a potential breeding ground for Aedes Aegypti)

Behind the scene: This is called thermal fogger. That thing weights 13 kg.

Adam the Musical

Who would have thought the quality of musicals in Malaysia is this high? 'Adam the Musical: An Uncommon Love' is a collaboration project of Actor Studio and Malaysian Aids Association. The musical dwelves on the issues of inter-racial marriage, and most important of all, how the society reacts to patients living with HIV.

The songs is what really caught my attention. Cocktailed with the superb performances from the actors, the story panned out as song after song was sung.

What the Malaysia's Traffic Rule says:

Give priority to the cars on the straights and also cars on your right when entering a roundabout.

What Malaysians interpret as:

Same as above, but you can be exempted if you drive fast and agile enough. Honks from the prioritized cars means to tell you of their envy towards your driving skills.

What Sabahans interpret as:

Priority is given to the car with the largest size. Honking simply means the other party can't afford to pay for the damage should they chose to abide the law and bang your car instead.

Case #2

What the Malaysia's Traffic Rule says:

Use the lane on your right only when you are overtaking.

What Malaysians interpret as:

Use the fast lane if you are driving fast enough.

What Sabahans interpret as:

The lane on the left are for slow bums. If you think you are fast enough, then you should drive on the right. Even though you are driving at 60 kmph, as long as you think you are fast, drive on the right.

Any forms of road-bullying are strictly prohibited.

What Malaysians interpret as:

If the car behind you flashes its light at you, or honked at you, it means: "Get off the fast lane, you slow-mo!".

Personally, I think this is by far the best movie I had watched this year. It catches the nostalgia of my childhood years, as well as the feeling of your first love （初恋）. This movie features most of the Malaysian big names, including Fish Leong （梁静茹）, Gary Chao （曹格）, and even Victor Wong （黄品冠）

The Whole Story:

Hau Wei wasn't able to turn on his laptop since yesterday, so he decided to send it to the Toshiba service center for a diagnosis. Then he was told that the processor and also the motherboard shows no signs of life.

The Diagnosis:

RM 2,800 for a complete resuscitation.

The Calculation:

The laptop originally costs RM 3,500. The market price now might be lower than RM 2,800.

The Verdict:

Spare part salvaging commenced.

Are Thou Humane?

Seems like things are getting more and more out of control lately:

These are for sure not the some of the first cases outcried in the faculty lately. There have been stolen laptops, stolen anatomy textbook, and the last straw, stolen sling bag.

From what I have heard, my suspicion points towards us the university students. Who else would have got off so easily if one were to linger around the bag room as frequent as this?

And this, I dare to point out (point out, not accuse, you'll understand later) that these were more prominent during our second year. There is, to a certain extent, a possibility that a brat smart enough to get himself enrolled into health-care related courses early this year, and yet still manage to pull off some of his (and might be her) old thefty manoeuvre.

But the pathetic part is how the management staffs in KCKL chose to ignore the matter. Probably the catching thieves is not in the job description.

Clarification note: the article above was purely based on deductions made from my own observation. It is , by no means, a channel of accusation.
